Linkage / forward / reverse problems

1983 Johnson 70hp Seahorse. Had carbs rebuilt, new plugs, compression checked ( all cylinders good ). Mechanic changed part (see 1st and 2nd pics ) which was homemade..back to an original part ( see 3rd pic ) . Previous owner had replaced bottom end (4th pic ) . Took to water today. Giving it forward throttle puts it in reverse. Reverse throttle puts it in forward. Writing on the bottom end ( 4th pic ) says "shift rod down = Fwd R/H ROT". Is there something in the bottom end that could be wrong? Am clueless here. When the homemade part was on, no problem in forward / reverse. Also noticed oil leaking from the propeller shaft..what's up with that ? Thanks in advance..

That's a 1970s/wrong gearcase with hydraulic assist.

You need a gearcase that has the back line of the skeg angled back rather than straight down. The correct gearcase shifts to forward by raising the shiftrod, not lowering it.

Well is that just ducky !!! Where would I start looking for the lower gear case for this motor? Like I said , worked fine until boat mechanic replaced the homemade part. Guess that's why it was "homemade" so it would work with the wrong lower gear case. Just sank 400 bucks into it....so where do I find the correct gear case?

Any reason not to keep the gearcase and refit the homemade part if it worked?

If it were mine I would do as Vic.S suggested, put the old part back on it and run it.
