I have a 96'20XD Bullet w/ a 98' 200 Optimax(ser. 0G725312) and when I shift into forward or reverse it will sometimes kill the motor and if does not kill the motor, it will go into gear with a big "clunk". 
It does not do this all the time. 1 out of 5 times. I have tried waiting until the RPM's have come down and have not noticed a difference. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
