little help needed

Hello,
i recently picked up a small fishing boat for very cheap at a yard sale..I pretty good at fixing things,so i bought it...the guy i bought it from did not
know much about it. For the life of me, I cannot find the serial num or this "tab" some are refering to... its a merc 40 hp it says rocket on the starboard side of the block in the back.is there something im missing?? I can post a photo of it if needed....any help would be greatly apreciated..

Hi!
You can post a picture, it might help. You should have a copy of the purchase invoice of the engine.
And you should look for any number (serial or part number) in the engine, specialy on the outside.
