Our retirement dream is to own a boat and travel to the Caribean and beyond. I am 5 years away from being ready to buy and will have aprox.40k-50k cash. Can it be done? There is so much to learn.
Thanks.

Steve - Welcome - lots of info here but plan on spending a year or two doing research and planning. Thousands have done just what you are shooting for and I bet hundreds of thousands have dreamed about it.

In addition to research you need to assess the practical stuff - How much experience do you have in boating? There is a bit more to it than reading up buying a boat and casting off if you want to do it safely.

Yes, it can be done. My wife and I (with a cat, a dog & 3 fishes) lived aboard a 36' powerboat for 2 years and loved it. We'll move back aboard one day I'm sure. Not everyone enjoys it but we sure did. The hardest part (usually) is finding a place to moor your boat that will let you live aboard. Make sure you have that figured out before you even consider shopping. Look for "Cruising for Cowards" by Liz & Andy Copeland. Lots of good information there.

Steve,
Way back in the 70s-80s I lived aboard sailboats for 10+ yrs and cruised the Bahamas for 2 yrs. My future plans are to retire and spend winters down there and summers in the USA. Surf around, there are several sites that have plenty of people who can answer your questions. Beware that many responders are gadget freaks and gadgets are generally made for the weekend warrior. Few are dependable for years of full time use while cruising.

http://www.takehersailing.com/
http://www.cruisersforum.com/
http://206.131.241.61/ubb/ultimatebb.php
http://www.sailnet.com/index.cfm
http://www.cruisingworld.com/forums.jsp
