Thanks in advance for all the help so far as I work through the many different issues of being a new owner of a used boat.

I have a 91, 16' Cajun bass boat. It has one small baitwell up front with a larger livewell at the rear. I have the front fill and drain figured out. I am having trouble with the rear. I read somewhere that once the pump is on and it will reach its own level and won't overfill. There is no overfill to the side of the boat. The only overfill "drains" at the bottom of the boat near the intake. Can someone explain how this works. Up to now I have kept that overfill drain plugged at the transom when I am in the water because I just don't understand the concept.

Re: Livewell overfill/drain

Jeepers
When you have drain plug in and turn on the fill pump it will fill tank. Once the tank is full water will run out the over flow and go out the drain just like your bath tub. If you plug the drain then it overflow into the boat just like your bath tub would if you plugged the over flow and left the water on. The rear live well on most bass boats the drain is below the level in the lake or river. It is important for water to go out over flow. Once tank is full you could shut off the fill pump, problem in on a hot day water will warm to point it will kill your fish. Also if full of water and you add a lot of fish with overflow plugged water will over flow into boat just like your bath tub would if you filled and plugged over flow then you and the wife got in. With the over flow open and tank full you can still turn on fill pump to add river temp water and keep tank cool, also if add fish extra water goes out the overflow. Many bass boats have a adjustable timer on fill pump so it will pump in cool water with oxgen in one minute out of every five.

If you like drilling holes in your boat you could add a seperate overflow drain so overflow would drain out above the water line. You would still have to have drain you have now to drain tank at end of day. Since most people do not like drilling big holes in boats makes since to use same drain for both. Since this drain is below the water line you need to make sure none of hoses leak or your boat will sink.
