Livewell pump reliability question

Hello,

I have an 1988 Bayliner Bass trophy I bought used and have been trying to get it back in shape for fishing. My livewell pump recently quit working and after checking the wiring I realized it had to be kaput. The problem is the thing is installed below the deck (thru transom) in a place that is impossible to reach without removing the entire rear deck. I have done this, (now I think I may need to replace the deck too) but my question is: If I replace this pump I would like to get the most reliable one possible, since replacing it is a pain - can anyone recommend a really reliable livewell pump brand? I have researched Rule, Mayfair, Attwood, Sureflow, and Tsunami, but I can't find any consumer reviews of their reliability. Also, as an aside, would it be wise to reroute the intake pipe and plumb it so the pump would be more accessible, or does the pump HAVE to be adjacent to the transom to work properly?

I really appreciate this site. It has helped me out several times and saved me a lot of money. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Livewell pump reliability question

The only requirement on live well pumps is that the intake MUST be below water level as these pumps are not self priming. As for reliability, they all depend on an electric motor and I suspect they all have about the same quality motor.

Re: Livewell pump reliability question

dont get too excited just replace the pump , or just put ice in it. if you want to keep baitfish alaive you can buy an aquarium pump cut off the plug and wire it to your switched power scource and bubble that way if its cheaper... just dont go ripping a buch of unecessary stuff out and make it harder on yourself. they even make batteryopperated bubblers that hold up well too
