Location of aft seat

Please explain why people mount the aft seat of a 12 foot boat right in the middle as opposed to one side or the other. It just doesn't seem like there is any way to reach around behind to operate the motor. I know, even weight distribution. But it seems like you would need an extra elbow in your arm to reach the tiller. Am I missing something here?
