99 Pontiac Sunfire 4cyl 4 spd auto. Thought it was the T/C solenoid, but it's actually not that. Thing is hard shifting or not shifting out of 3rd gear, so...
Where "exactly" is the shift solenoid? I know a guy who thinks his is going bad, one place told him the trans HAS to come out to get to it, another told him, "it might not have to, some are easy to get at." So any of you know for sure? Labor rates here are $90/hour, so it's a HUGE difference!

Look on the transmission, it might be possible to drop the drive shaft and tilt the tranny down...uh..unless its FWD.

4T40E the shift solenoids are in the valve body, under the side cover:

(Not like in some trans where they're right under the tranny oil pan)

It is very doubtful there's enough room in the engine bay to remove the side cover to get to it. The drivetrain will have to be removed, or at least the cradle partly removed and drivetrain tilted down to get the shift solenoid.

ajgraz, thanks. That's what I was thinking, but of course someone else thought they were still in/under the bottom pan. Not much room on the side in those little cars. :(
Thanks again!
