Location of tilt and trim pump

Hello everyone!

I'm finally looking to install my tilt/trim pump for a 50hp mid 80s mercury. the tilt/trim pump does not really "fit" anyone in the rear of the boat, but it would fit beautifully under the front bow (approx. 10 feet away).

I cannot imagine this is a good idea, but I'm really not sure. I would have to run lines that are at least twice as long as the factory lines.

The only other way I can mount this is to take up some of my deck space in the rear - not that this will ruin my life, but the total boat is 15' so it's not like I have a lot of open deck space to start with.

Another solution would be to see if I can find a "shorter" tilt/trim motor. The one that I have is VERY tall

I would think that having custom hydraulic lines made would be very costly. I think they would work just fine, however. I was able to stuff the PTT pump under the gunwale of my 16' speedboat. I would think you should be able to do the same, as the speedboat was very low profile.

Some info that may or may not help you.
Why not use a standard merc/mariner power trim unit that fits between the mounting brackets.

I have a mid 80s 35 merc and a 96 40 mariner magnum.
Both mid sections and mounting bushings are identical.
The complete 40 mariner mounting bracket,bushings and power trim unit is a direct bolt on to the older merc midsection.

My 35 merc had old style mounting system,power trim wasnt available.
But my 96 mariner system fits right on.
35-60 merc from 80s-late 90s are all interchangable mid section,lower units,mounting brackets.
Just different powerheads,different cowlings,different props.

Those parts can be had cheaply.

I have a 4cyl 40 magnum powerhead complete going to waste in my garage.its a 50 yamaha powerhead with 40 hp carbs.
Torqy lil engine.
Matbe its time to sell.

I don't know too much about this, but...so long as I find one that is rated to handle it...and has the same style pump connections, would I be able to use a smaller unit? or perhaps one that is "wide" rather than tall? I imagine the wiring is going to be simple. Positive, negative to power the pump. Then wiring a two way momentary switch?

Mine has 4 lines, two smaller and two larger and are fitted to the bottom of the pump (increasing the height another 2.5".
