I have a MERCRUISER 165 motor that has been garaged for over 15 years. Its in a Arista Craft boat. I tried turning over the motor but its locked up. I was told that I should put Marvel Mystery oil in all of the Cylinders and it should spin freely after that.

Questions:

1)Will this work, if not what should I do
2) If not should I get the motor rebuild
3) If not rebuild, what kind of motor should I put in this boat.

This is my first boat and I have no clue

Thanks in advance

Re: Locked Motor

The MMO will work if the engine hasnt been frozen forever, like maybe just this year with fresh water being the culprit, but you can try it as it is probably the product to try. Pull all the plugs and add about a cup per cylider and let it soak a few days, the longer the better. Leave the plugs out when you try and turn it. Personally I think you are probably toast though. Sorry.

Re: Locked Motor

Fifteen years is (gulp) quite a spell! Could well have some real stalagmites in those cylinders. But not much to hurt by trying to free it up.

Pull the plugs, pour an ounce of 'juice' down each hole. Actually try to spray it in as best you can. Let it sit for a couple of days. Then use a breaker bar and socket on the crank pully nut and try to break it free.

If you do break it free, turn it over several revolutions, spraying in some additional MMO. Check to make sure you have oil in it. Verify the oil pressure guage works ( ground lead)then crank it over until you get 20 or so lbs of pressure.

Now the fun begins. Supply water to the outdrive, your impeller is probably shot so disconnet the line from the outdrive to the thermostat housing to verify water to the motor, Reinstall the plugs, verify you have spark, make sure you have fresh gas, (you'll probably have to prime the carburetor) and let her rip. Do not rev it. Let it warm up at a fast idle till the temp comes up then shut it down and change the oil and filter.

If you get it running you should take the outdrive to a mechanic and have everything serviced and the impeller changed. Your seals could be shot as well. If you get excess smoke or oil consumption you'll know the motor has to come apart. You could have rusty valves and seats, pitted cylinder walls and all kinds of problems but I'd give it a whirl.

Some might say you should tear it down from the git go. ????? but I think you have nothing to lose. Chebby sixes are cheap.

ps I just noticed you're from Nuwaleeans. With that gulf state humidity I ain't holdin my breath.

Re: Locked Motor

Thanks guys for the input, however after tring to spin the motor it was discovered that its a bust. The cylinders were rusted up but the heads were not that bad. Also, the manifold leading to the out drive is cracked and several freeze out plugs were blown.

Since the motor is apart, I'm thinking about getting it rebuild.
