My manual calls for type A loctite on my engine seals. I don't think type A exists any more. Anyone know what can be used as it's replacement and where I can get it?

My maint manual says use #271. I haven't gone out to the shop to see what color that is, but when I worked in industry red was for permanent installations and blue was for fastners that you would be removing at a later date. I have some green too but never use it.

Is that referring to the oil seal installation or something else?

Lots of threads on this and related subjects. After reading most of them, and absorbing a whole lot of differing experiences/opinions, I ended up using NAPA Aviation Gasket Sealant on my drive shaft seals. Holding up well so far.

It had to do with screws, but considering a seal seating, to me it would depend upon whether or not I would ever have to access the area again. Over the years, I set a lot of seals with nothing at all and never had a call back.....my call back from me. I wasn't an engine mechanic by trade.

Really, blue does just fine. I use blue for everything and never had a problem.

Ya, I'm not sure if this is to keep the seal from coming out or to seal it? Cant really tell. I'm thinking it's probably not that important. I'm just going to put a light coat of some of the red stuff on the inner seal.

I don't ever recall installing an oil seal on anything that the seal wasn't an interference fit with the race into which it was placed. Surely a little glue won't hurt, but with an interference seal, in my opinion it would rub out most if not all of the glue on it's way in. Course there would be some on the back side where the seal metal seats against the housing.

271 sounds like what I used long ago to install magneto bearings.

I checked my half dozen bottles and none are 271. However I have the 3 colors I mentioned. Surely they have a www. Look it up if interested.

The whole thing became frustrating so I just went with some stuff I got at the auto parts store. I cant imagine it matters that much since I have seen people install without it.

Not that it matters, I hit their site and the blue is 242 and the red is 271. Blue is said to be removed with hand tools and red requires heat and hand tools. I guess we used blue because our products had to be serviced. Heating was not an option.

I'm trying to figure out why they would require you to put it on an oil seal. Trust me, after getting that seal in there, it ain't coming out.

Got me! I have written tech manuals in the past and I assure you everyone writing them isn't necessarily a seasoned person on the subject. I'll leave it at that.

In the manuals is says loctite A. Then you have to look on a certain page to find out what all those Lubes/greases and thread locks are.
I'm 200 miles from my manuals. So can't help Ya. Hope that helps. I was confused at first also.
