I have a small splitter of 25 ton capacity. It works fine except for the transient back. The handle keeps prematurely shutting off. This is a pain since while the ram is going back is when I like to stack the wood and get the next log ready. So meanwhile I have to keep reaching over and push the handle to get the ram to go back whereas it should transient back without help.

Have lots of wood to split yet and need every second count on getting it done.

Any ideas? ......SS

Re: Log Splitter Help

SS, put rubber strap on it to hold handle where you want it and then when you are done spliiting one log, it will hold the handle in the come back position.
Just a thought. :)

Re: Log Splitter Help

I thought about that, but once the ram is completely retracted, I don't want the pump to keep trying to retract it. Bogs the motor down when that happens. It should pop the handle to the neutral position only once it is fully retracted.

There has to be an adjustment on the spool valve, but I don't like messing with something until I gain some knowledge on it first. Experimenting can get costly. You deal with boats, you know what I mean..... :D ....SS

Re: Log Splitter Help

My grandson does a great job of running the handle, but he has limited time that he can help me. As for my teenager? yeah right, he rather work with a weight bench to get muscles instead of doing it the old fashion way. Let him try using the splitting mawl to split some, and he couldn't even do one piece with nice straight grain. What a wimp.

Thanks SBN.......SS

SS I have one of those to and mine did it and I took the lines off the indent valve where the handle is and flushed the valve and cured my problem. Don't know how old your unit is but i change my hydro oil every two seasons because that stuff cain't stand to be dirty any at all

You may also want to check the pin that holds the handel to the valve. Sometimes when they get deformed it does not allow the valve to to be set where exactly where it should be, causing the valve to be finicky.

Re: Log Splitter Help

Speaking of a log splitter...

Anyone have some plans to build one?

I don't burn wood anymore, but I have a few friends that do.
I would like to try my hand at building a few splitters. I don't know if it would be cost effective or not.

Thanks,

H.

Re: Log Splitter Help

I built one that I hook to the 3-point hitch of my tractor....it is a vertical splitter. I used a cynlinder off of a John Deere cotton picker. Works great and you don't have to lift the log on to the splitter rail just stand it up under the ram and it BUSTS it.
