Re: long hair mechanics

sure. i got my boat in rapid city SD. the dealer there was a mom & pop biz. their only employee, the mechanic, had hair almost down to his waist. + some kinda mouth piercing that made him look like he had vampire fangs. he was a nice fella and seemed to know how to work on boats. he sure helped me in inspecting mine for defects.

Sure, but who cares how long his (or her) hair is, as long as he/she keeps it away from fan belts...

I'm going to take a shot that the OP is a mechanic who has long hair. His boss wants him to cut it because of safety issues, aka getting it caught in moving parts..... But, maybe I'm way off base....... :)

That's what I was thinking.

My employer makes ALL employees wear a hair net for safety. They can always tie it in a pony tail or get it caught. Seeing some ones scalp ripped off in any machinery is not pretty.

When I was wrenching I had hair down to the bottom of my Shoulder blades, at work it was always tied up, last thing I needed was to get my hair caught in a Boring machine...

That was 20 years ago and now I don't have any hair anyways WTF?

No neck ties either......:eek::)

I had to wear ties way back when I was doing computer repair. We had some humongus hardware with plenty of belts, gears and pulleys. The old timers wore clip-ons and us young guys ragged them. I switched to bow-ties and clip-ons too after a close call. Tucked in long ties still managed get in the wrong place.

You might get used to the low maintenance side of things. I did.

I wouldn't worry about growing it back until "after" I got a job. 1st appearance can make or break an interview..... It's just the way it works....

Re: long hair mechanics

I used to have hair down past the middle of my back. I kept it up under a do'rag when I was working. Worked with guys for over a year that were floored when I took it off lol, they never knew. Only thing I ever got it caught tin was the damn car window... Or some hot girls fingers.

Its not dangerous if you've got some brains about you.

I did't see any judgement in the posts, but I wish I could get hair to grow below my ears instead of out of them.

Lots of us are fond of a long haired Carpenter.

Part of what they do is help make you as employable as possible. It's good for you and good for their image. As WIMUSKY said, first impression is everything. People can argue all day that long hair, tattoos and piercings should have no bearing on how someone is regarded, but they do.

Re: long hair mechanics

when I worked as a machinist I had to keep mine in a pony tail and put up in a cap. than I went to school for design. it was "highly recommended" that I cut it. now days it is so short I can get a sunburn on my scalp and I love it that way. Easy to car for. sometimes I try to let it grow back out but than I get tired of messin with it and get it cut again.

you'll be fine with long hair once you get the job. The school's rules also have to do with their image. This is the type of guy they turn out into the world, etc.

good luck with the classes.
