Long hub prop on Volvo short shaft?

I have a 1991 Wellcraft Eclipse 186 with a Volvo 290 I/O that was recently re-powered with a Chevy 350. The original motor was a 4 cyl. I found a good ski prop for the low gears: short hub 15x19.

I want to use a 15x21 for cruising, but it only comes in the long hub size. I have a 290 with a short shaft. I was given conflicting advice: one prop sales guy said I could use it if I remove the 3/4" hub spacer and secure the prop with the cone and the bolt that holds the cone to the shaft. It does fit. Another mechanic said that I should not do this because in reverse I could spin the cone off... This sounds far fetched to me. Any opinions? Many thanks!

Re: Long hub prop on Volvo short shaft?

Lemme know if I need to post a disclaimer.......LOL

I did this on a 270 outdrive. I used a new Solas Amita long hub prop on a short shaft. Yes, I removed the spacer/line cutter and tabbed washer. There was still some slop, so I fashioned a spacer (less than 1/8th inch) and everything worked great. I used all last season, with no ill effects and no loss in speed/power. Never loosened or fell off, LOL.

I hope that helps you some....

which side did you put the spacer on? I would be interested in doin this as well, as "short hub" props for a decent price seem to be in short supply.

Ive been running a long hub with just the cone and bolt all spring with no problems. If your worried, put a little blue locktite on the allen bolt. I check mine everytime out, and it hasn't moved a bit.

Re: Long hub prop on Volvo short shaft?

Just a quick followup question on this subject.. My 270 short doesn't have the threaded end so I have to use the locking tab ring. Anyone had luck using a long hub prop this way? I need to run a 14x23 on my boat and the short is no longer available. This would be a excellent solution if it works out!

Thanks

Dave
