That's a short shaft, if it were long it would have a 5 inch extension between the lower unit and the exhaust leg, 10 inch extension would be an extra long "sail" motor.

looked that way to me as well, but there was a question about the angle in the picture. I pick it up tomorrow!!

Somebody painted the cowl, probably to hide the fact that it's a 15. They are good little motors, just keep up the maintenance and it should last you a long time. Do the water pump if it hasn't been done in a while. Do a compression test on the motor if you can before you buy it.

Compression test and spark check, and ill make sure the prop spins without noises in and out of gear. Thanks again..

Re: Long shaft or short shaft?

Confirm the shaft length ( not all longshaft motors have the extension piece) by measuing from the transom top to just above the cavitation plate.
If that's about 15" it is a standard shaft, if it's 20" it's a long shaft.

OMC did not use the term "short shaft"

OMC only lists one part number for the exhaust housing, not 2 different length, not sure what you mean Vic?

I've a '96 9.9 longshaft in the barn that looks just like that. The cavitation plate looks to be about 5" below the transom -- doesn't it? Should be easy enough to measure though.

Hmmnn.. I thought this might be an easy one, but i guess not. Unfortunately i will have to travel an hour to get a look at it, and load up and deliver an old 3 wheeler for barter. Lot of work just to find out it's a LS. ahopefully i can get a hold of him and look up some #'s before i travel.

I was the one who raised the question to the OP. bktheking, looks like you're correct. I was concerned because depending on the angle of the photo it did look to me like the cav plate was a good bit below the transom.

It is lower for sure, the transom is lower in the middle thus putting the cav plate lower, it may work ok as it is.

He's not buyin' the boat so it's all good if the motor is a short shaft. :)

BTW, It's an anti-ventilation plate A/V for short, not a cavitation plate. Cavitation plate is a misnomer.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outboard_motor

" Ventilation

Ventilation is a phenomenon that occurs when surface air or exhaust gas (in the case of motors equipped with through-hub exhaust) is drawn into the spinning propeller blades. With the propeller pushing mostly air instead of water, the load on the engine is greatly reduced, causing the engine to race and the prop to spin fast enough to result in cavitation, at which point no thrust is generated at all. The condition continues until the prop slows enough for the air bubbles to rise to the surface.[4] The primary causes of ventilation are: motor mounted too high, motor trimmed out excessively, damage to the antiventilation plate, damage to propeller, foreign object lodged in the diffuser ring.
Cavitation

Cavitation as it relates to outboard motors is often the result of a foreign object such as marine vegetation caught on the lower unit interrupting the flow of water into the propeller blades."

but everyone knows what you mean by it. Call it an A/V plate and then two posts later you have to explain what you mean by A/V plate ;)
