Hello everyone,

I was wondering if it's possible to switch a long shaft to a short shaft on a foot?

If you have the 5" extension piece on there now, it is a little easier. You still would need a short driveshaft, and either install it into your gearcase (big job), or swap gearcases with a shorter one.

Re: Long shaft to short shaft

Hi Snowmann. Is this your 1980 50 HP Merc? I once did the reverse with a 1971 80 HP Merc. It became surplus when I totalled a 15" short shaft boat in a car accident 8 hours after upgrading to the brand new Merc from a 40 HP Johnson. That model didn't have a 5" extension piece, it required replacing the outer housing, the driveshaft, cooling tubes, shift links, etc to accommodate the 20" long shaft replacement boat. My Dad, the toolmaker, made a number of the parts, including I think, the driveshaft, complete with heat treated splines. The OEM housing was expensive. The old housing had no trade-in value (even as new). I remember that we had to frankenstein the attachment point of the shocks, since apparently even those were different between shaft lengths. It worked well for years without problems, but it was an expensive proposition. On a used older motor, I don't think it's worth the effort. - Grandad

Re: Long shaft to short shaft

Hello Grandad,

I'm sorry to hear about the accident you had!

I'm not looking in changing a long shaft outboard to a short shaft outboard.

The only thing i'd like to do is to change the lower unit from a long shaft to a short shaft I'm not even touching the outboard.

The outboard I'll be putting this lower unit on is already a short shaft.

Would you happen to know if it's just a straight exchange or is there gears that need to be changed as well. I just want to see if it's worth while to tinker with the lower unit. Or should I get a short shaft lower unit?

Thanks for your time :)

Don

Sorry Don, that was the last experience that I have had with outboards. That was over 40 years ago. I defer to those with more recent experience. - Grandad

Is there anybody else out there who can help me out?

I'm sure this must've been done or tried before.
