Hello again this is the captain, sorry, I just had to do it. Anyway I was using the search and saw that some times you have to remove the power head for conversion Is this true with my motor going to a long shaft.couple questions what is involved here I'm buying a book probably Seloc shortly so I'll know more. What things should I look for when buying used long shaft components?

Here's what you'll need:

Exhaust housing extension
Longshaft drive shaft
Shiftshaft extension and link or longshaft length shiftshaft
Water pipe extension(s) (2?) or longshaft length pipe(s)
Long 3/8 bolt
Exhaust housing mounting bolts (6?) (same size as the ones you already have)

The exhaust housing extension is also critical. There are two possibilities for 35s, but only one for a 1957. Newer models won't fit. You can look for parts from a 25, 30, 35, and 40 (although the 40 would have the wrong exhaust housing extension). You can get these from Johnsons, Evinrudes, Sea Kings, Gales, a few others.

The parts are pretty straightforward. Beware of worn bearing and seal surfaces on the driveshaft, as well as worn splines. Might as well buy a new impeller as long as you're in there. Good luck. If you find a used or junked longshaft it should have everything you need.

You don't have to take off the powerhead, there are different ways to extend the shift rod.
When I did mine I extended the rod part that comes out of the lower unit.
It is VERY important to use an o-ring between the cooling water pipe and the extension. If you dont use it, you will look at a ruined powerhead in half a year.
Come to think of it,I have a complete extended lower unit in my garage. If you are interested write me at "dharrin1@rochester.rr.com"
