My cousin has a 21' Four Winns with a OMC Cobra pkg. The shift cable is stiff and we decided to replace it. I have a friend who owns a Merc/Yam dealership and he ordered the cable. Problem is when we pulled it through we found it was way too short. 54" vs around 82". He never dealt in OMC and said he saw only one cable (54") listed. This is what I have found while searching. Is there a longer cable and part #?

Re: Longer shift cable???? Need Help

Sorry, It has a 5.0 EFI in it with the shift plate on top of the front of the motor. From some of the pics I have googled, a lot of the motors had the shift plate on the side near the riser, which would explain a shorter run from the sterndrive. The cable that is being replaced has no part # on it, but it is red. It's a 93 Four Winns Horizon 210. I was looking on Telflex's website/catalog but couldn't find anything that looked right. The shorter cable was Teleflex, but I don't have the cable or box to give you a part #
Thanks

I just ruff measured one of my old cables for a cobra and the casing of the cable was about 58". I think you need to find a cable for a king cobra probably different than a cobra cable.

There is a small bit of info on the web that leads me to believe there is a "special" cable needed for Fuel Injected engines with the plate on the top front of the engine. I cannot find a part # for it in any description, but it can't be the only one out there. Thanks for your help.

In just a brief search it seems like Volvo/Penta cables go right from the controls and not a split. Am I wrong?

My cousin got a hold of an old OMC dealer who knew what we were talking about. He said it was a short run setup that OMC was dicking around with. He said the cable is indeed longer and probably no longer made. He said he recalls having one in old stock. Hard to believe that Sierra and Telflex don't market the cable.

I have a call into a dealer in Louisiana inquiring about the this "special cable" too.

Well I pulled the cable all the way out and under some crud found a part # omc 987965. Search does no good. Found one place that would not confirm the part number, but wanted $681 for the cable they had!!!!!

It was a short lived experiment, 'n OMC is long Gone, over a decade now...
Why, O Why,..?? would anybody gear up to produce parts, that there's very little, to No demand for...

I know this don't help You any, but honestly, there ain't no help out there for Obsolete equipment...

'n of course, it'd Help, Alot, if you could ID yer drive Better... 'cause Obviously, it ain't a run of the mill, Cobra...
I asked in post #2,.... Do ya have any NUMBERS to ID the "Cobra Package",..??

I wish I could find a model number on the drive. It's been painted so many times its hard to find. I did make a call to Doug Russell Marine and they found a cable with the same part number, but no specs on it. This cable's outer housing is 79". I feel bad. I don't like when I cannot fix something.

I've run into this a few years ago when you could still get the cable. There is indeed a longer lower shift cable for that motor. If you can't get the cable you might be able to get the shift bracket from an older boat and mount it closer so the short cable will reach.

Just doing a little geometry in my head ( I just replaced my shift cable) are you sure the normal one wouldn't make it there? I think there is enough slack in mine that I would feel comfortable saying it should reach there... I am taking the boat out tomorrow, and before I put it up, I will see if my cable will reach to that area

I checked.. it won't reach that far..

Thanks, I don't think it will reach, but it's worth a try.

A photo of the outdrive you have will help these guys too. Then they'll know if they are dealing with a King or a normal Cobra outdrive. Easily identified with a photo....Just a thought....

Its a normal Cobra, not much to figure out now aside from where a cable may be hiding in someone's old stock. King Cobra cables were different.

I did an Ebay "Omc Cable shift" and found some from 50 inches up to 15 ft. All kinds of sizes. And the longer ones were in the 40 dollar range.

Yep, you are correct, but unfortunately the longer cables are those that go from the controls to the shift plate. We ordered a cable from Doug Russell and hopefully it's correct. Fingers Crossed.

Well turns out Doug Russell Marine ordered the right cable and guess where it came from? BRP and it is tagged with OMC part number 987965, but the paperwork says 987964. In any case it's correct and slides like butter. Fingers crossed.
