My engine hadn't been running smoothly. I guess now I know why. This came off a 75hp Chrysler. 1981 model I think.

I cleaned all three bowls and carbs just to be safe. I also added an inline fuel filter between the fuel pump and carbs. Hopefully this won't happen again.:embarassed:

the black may be rubber from gasket or fuel line that is being eaten by the additives in modern gas. As the carbs are apart it may be time for new gaskets and new fuel hose that are designed for modern gas.

Already there Glenn.:) New fuel lines all the way from tank to the carbs. We just bought her about a month ago and are still sorting things out. Oh yeah cleaned the gas tank too.

Re: Look what I found in my carbs!

Just make sure the air screw is set right.
Base setting.1 turn out from lightly seated.
Then motor warm.
Turn top air screw in 1/8th turn, wait 10 seconds and then another 1/8th turn.
Do this until the motor coughs, bucks, stalls.
Then out 1/2 turn.
Do this on all cylinders.
Then do it again.
The idle should be about 750-800rpm's in gear.
About 1100-1200 In N

My starcraft doesn't have a tach. So whats the best way to gauge rpm? I've been looking for a hand held tach but haven't had much success.

Thanks for the suggestion foodfisher another tool for the garage. I'm lucky the admiral doesn't mind me buying more tools. If I keep it up I may have to change professions just to justify all this extra stuff in my toolbox:laugh:.

Re: Look what I found in my carbs!

Before you reassemble everything, remove the low speed mixture screw(s). Using some WD 40 with the red tube attached, spray into the needle hole(s) and spray through the bottom of the casting up through the small diameter brass tube(s). This will help clean the low speed passages and ensure adequate fuel flow.

Remember: You can do the job slow, fast, or half-fast.

Re: Look what I found in my carbs!

Thanks Frank for the info. I removed the screws and sprayed carb cleaner in them. Hope that's ok. I haven't had a chance to get her back in the water to check if the cleaning helped. I'm sure it did. I did replace the fuel pump diaphram and all the gaskets in the carbs. I'll let you know how they turned out. By the way I'm a terrible speller. Please forgive.

had same thing in my 91 force 120...replaced all lines up to carbs and even had it caked in the fuel pump...i installed see through filters between the water seperator and the tank and then again from the pump to the carbs to prevent that stuff from reaching my carbs again and for troubleshooting purposes
