i am going to look at a 1984 rinker with a 470 mercruiser 3.7 in it
is this a good or bad motor what things should i look at and can any one tell me what drive would be on it the owner is old and dont know thanks bill

Unless you are very mechanically inclined and enjoy doing all of your own maintenance and repairs, the 470 is usually not a very good engine choice.

This article describes one of the main flaws in the 470. Also pay attention to the last 4 or 5 paragraphs under "Other Issues":

Probably the very worst marine motor ever built....RUN AWAY!!
If it were free i still would not take it.

I had one. Im incredibly mechanical and I would never buy one again.

I didnt buy a boat to tinker with or get stuck with. I bought it to go places and not break down.. Failed!

thanks all i will look somewere else i am just looking for a good used io i had a johnson 115 that somthing caused a ring or two to break so i think its io time

I had one and it was a strong engine while it was running. I sold it while it was still running BK

look for somthing newer with a Merc 4.3 or Volvo 4.3 or v-8 .. stay away from a 3.0 as they have little power.
