I saw an add for a Merc 75 hp motor that had power tilt but not power trim. It is on a pontoon boat. I need a motor for a 18 foot flat boat. Can the power tilt be used like a trim or do I need to keep looking for a motor with tilt and trim? Thanks.

I have power tilt not trim (1979 dealer-installed OMC accessory) on my 70hp...it'll hold the motor up at low power such as idling through a stumpfield or shallows...but it comes right on down once you get up over trolling speed.

My Force 70 came with a MErc tilt unit on it.
Single cylinder, works as both tilt and trim, at any speed.

What year is the motor?

Tilt has an override valve that releases when pressure gets excessive regardless of whether or not it also has trim.

Like a PTT unit has about 20 or so degrees of trim tucked inside 40 or so degrees of tilt. If you have the engine outside the trim range and goose it, it will pressure relieve back to the nearest trim spot. However, if you are at low rpm's it will go the full tilt range and hold it.

About all your trim will do for you is to tilt the engine up while you're polling across the flat.
