Well, this is my first post, so here goes..<br /><br />Had engine checked the other day. As it turns out, both manifolds are shot and the head is cracked. The engine "was" a 1992 Merc. v-6 175h, 4.3l 2 barrel. I can get the same engine in a '91 with a 4 barrel installed for 1800 bucks. Any comments? What should I look for when I go see this engine today? I really need some input here. Thanks!! :)

Re: Looking at another engine

I did the same thing as you, I replaced my motor that was shot ande bought another used motor. To m y dismay it had a bad manifold and is going to cost me another $600.00. Not making me very happy right now. I would ask that the manifold be taken off and looked at. They can be checked for leaks. Or atleast get a warranty with your engine. Mine didn't have that since I only paid $600.00 for the engine.

Yeah, it sucks doesn't it. I am hoping the guy will give me some kind of warranty. I'm thinking of calling around to other shops and seeing what they have. Hate to jump on the first option so quickly. Unfortunately, I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to any kind of engine.

Re: Looking at another engine

I went and looked at the other engine. It appears to be in great shape. It has been upgraded to a 4 barrel and it's fuel injected. The engine inlcudes everything: Exhaust (manifolds & elbows), cooling system, electrical (distributor, plug wires & motor harness). fuel system, power steering, all belts & hoses, coupler, bell housing and motor mounts. Probably 210hp(Merc. v-6 4.3l) All this and installed for 1800 is what I'm going for. Someone on another board commented "Is this a marine engine?<br /><br />It's just that someone tried to pull that quicky on me. I'm not familiar with the 4.3 but I hpoe someone can comment on what sounds like a TBI injection system on the engine."<br />What does this mean?

"It has been upgraded to a 4 barrel and it's fuel injected"<br /><br />I'm kinda new at this, but how's that work?

It has a throttle body thats look similar to a 4 barrel carb, but has 4 injectors instead, check if that injection is marine, holley did make a marine unit, to replace carburators it was called 'pro-jection' other than that I have only seen the recent 4.3 mpi motor rated at 225hp, but that is not to say a TBI motor from Merc does not exsist, I just have not seen one in a 4.3 V6

If he states that it is automotive, do not except it, if the boat burns your insurance will bail, If he says its marine, see if he'll put it on paper. If its automotive and the rest of the motor is good, then you could swap your old intake and carb over also but may need to change fuel pump to do so. Just be sure it's safe, it is a buyers beware purchase, good luck and post your findings for us all, when you get more info.
