There's no way to tell if it's good or not without seeing it and testing it. You'd want to do a compression test. That is the single most important test.

And that's a long long way. Shipping it will cost a fortune. Or driving to get it. Can you not find one closer?

I've been looking around. Craigslist has some motors. I need a Short Shaft Engine for an old 14' starcraft. Any suggestions on where to look? Thanks!

I dont know where you would look down there but I would buy locally so that you can test/see it first.

Heck, I have an old 40 for sale but I'm pretty far away also!

i've never bought off craiglist, but have bought many off ebay, ask more pictures, all side of motor, both side of lower unit. do the controls come with it., does the wireing harness, and junction box for the transom. compression test, spark test. when was it last run. condition of lower unit oil.

save all your communication, just in case he lied about the motor.

so far i have never bought a bad one. if he asks like a total duf, say i no nothing about motors, then pass on it. he knows more than he's telling you.

as far as freight, have him strap to pallet, i use freight center. com for all my shipping. Ali , is great to work with there.
