I've been looking for an aluminum boat to restore. Had a nice 18 ft starcraft with no motor almost bought but paperwork complications made it fall through.
I just found this one. Anyone have some info on it? Says it's a 1966 starcraft 18ft. Is that outboard an add on? Could that cause any issues?

Go to www.fiberglassics.com then there glassic library icon. under aluminum boats you will find starcraft, take it from there. The motor bracket is a add on and may have been done to give you more room in the stern of the boat.If it had a I/O you should be able to see the patch work done and if it was a outboard you will probably see added on metal where the motor well used to be. In any case I doubt this set up will hurt the performance in any way and if anything is a positive add on if you plan on fishing. The hardtop is also a add on. Fairly easy boat to mod anyway you want, dont use pressure treated wood on aluminum boats. IF the engine checks out the price seems to be inline for that area of the country, maybe I would go in there with a offer of 12-1300 after sea trial with cash in hand. There is not much deadrise in that hull, maybe 10 degrees so it will be a bit of a hard ride in chop and the trade off is it will sit better [ not rock as much ] when trolling, drifting or anchored than a deep V. ......Looks like it was the Holiday model and went for 1295.00 in 1966 ,was a I/O and has been converted to a outboard....The only thing that has me wondering is where the motor sits in relation to the hulls bottom. The horizontal plate above the prop should be about even with the bottom of the boat. So if you took a yardstick and placed it against the bottom it would intersect with that plate above the prop.If it is mounted to low the peformance will suffer. It could also be raised with a jackplate or something more permanent if you didn't want to spend the money on the plate, not a deal breaker if your going to restore/mod it anyway.

You can almost be assured these old stars leak some, all the ones I've been in did. Not going to sink you are anything, just need a bilge pump is all.

Mr 88,
Theres a lot more info here at iboats about Starcrafts then anywhere else online, FG included:
http://forums.iboats.com/forum/owners-groups-by-manufacturer/s/starcraft-boats

And theres a massive list of brochures there ^^^, significantly more then at FG.

Ed,
If you're buying an 18ft Starcraft cabin boat for $1600, it may need a little work. I'm a 1966 model and dont leak a drop, yet  IMO, a little leaking into a 40+ year old boat has nothing to do w maker and lots to do w age. Other makers riveted boats probably do to after 40+yrs.

Hope the pre purchase inspection goes great. Great boat if its corrosion free.

That motor is sitting way too low.

"Great Deep Sea Fishing Boat" ... that has no rod holders. ???

Lower unit has been replaced.

Might be a fun project but tread lightly.

Can't go wrong w/ a tin boat unless as others have said she's been eaten up by salt.

If you can get a sea trial to see if it has any weird handling problems from the bracket I'd do that otherwise I look forward to seeing another SC resto thread in the drydock.

I ended up buying a 17' aluminum 1987 blue fin with a 1988 90hp Johnson. It needs some work but so far I have got the engine going. Pulled the trim motor for replacement and started on demoing the interior.

Very nice. Now how about some details if you are so inclined to share. More pictures, ideas?

Any pointers on removing the rack and pinion under the wheel? It has a warning about removal.

I'm planning on pulling the floor and all the carpet then putting down vinyl and some pedestal seats. I still need to remove the VRO. Who knows what else I will come up with along the way....... I'm always open to suggestions too.

I guess I will just dive in. I have been contemplating leaving the driver console in place but that would limit replacing all the floor pieces.

I left the driver console in place when working on my Kingfisher. (See the thread in my link.) Once the retaining screws were removed from the deck, the wood panels slid out from underneath it easily. Then while working, I'd drape the console over the side of the boat out of the way. You may be able to do the same thing. :joyous:
