I am interested in a boat in the 17-20 foot range with a beam of 7’ 6” or greater. I want something a little different than the standard. I am not looking for a fast boat but something to putter along (4-8 knots) and protect me from the elements. It will have a pilot house where two people can sit and stand (min 6’3”) comfortably and a self-bailing deck because it will be at anchor when not in use. It could be use wood or aluminum as I can adapt the plan.

I am familiar with Glen-L and Bateau plans. I have looked at a number of “character boats” but have not seen exactly what I need. I am thinking along the lines of a small workboat or pilot boat type of boat. It can be with or without a bunk since it will mostly be used for day trips. Any help in finding a plan for such a boat would be helpful.

Welcome aboard.

Look at some of the small tug boat style plans. They are unique.

I have exhausted Google's resources. Just wondering if I missed something obscure that are not carried by the big boat plan sellers..

Thanks Matt. C-Dory 19 Angler is a nice boat but its fiberglass and they have no dealers in Canada. If I could only find a boat like that in aluminum or the plans to build one in wood or aluminum. Any more ideas?

You can find Dory plans all over. Lots of variants on the Dory style. Google "Hunky Dory" for one (by Glen L).

if I can find thousands of designs in a 2 second search for dory plans, tug plans or mini trawler plans, so can the OP. its not hard. many naval architect firms even sell boat plans on the web.

Scott:

If you can be of help, share with me a boat that fits the criteria in my original post.

my problem with your question or post is... what I consider unique is not likely what you think is unique or different. Personally I would never run a boat in open water with a WOT of 4 knots. If you ran into bad seas you will have a hard time seeking shelter but that's just me. Good luck with your quest be sure to post back when you do find something.

I think a better question is what are the better brands of boat and then pick from that list maybe?
