Hi, all

I have a 1974 inline 6 Mercruiser 165, that i would like to put a six pack on.

I?m not having luck finding a head for that, and hoping someone may know where to look. I already have the Carbs, but i can not start making linkages, cable mounting brackets etc. until I have the spacing locked down. I already have a few projects going, so this one will not be a priority for a little wile. I just figure may as well start looking now, and if I find one I can bench fit everything before mounting the head. (guess I would do that either way)

Thanks

Re: looking for a merc 165 head

That's probably what he's talking about.

If I'm not mistaken, there's NO marine manifolds that would allow that.

If there was it wouldn't help anyway. That engine is limited by the exhaust system. you can only cram so much exhaust flow out the riser and drive.

Now if you could go to dry stacks, and a non marine intake manifold, well you can make a lot of HP in a 250 L6 that way.

You wouldn't have a marine engine anymore though.......and in an enclosed engine compartment you'd have a huge fire hazard.

If you want more power, put a V-8 in it.

Rick

My mistake, head and manifold (know what i was thinking, but could not type as fast as the mind) I don?t believe the current head will work, and the current manifold will obviously not.

I already have the exhaust issues figured out, As far as just going to an 8, what is the fun in that? Anyone can pull one motor, and drop in another.

by the way yes 3 duces?..

by the way, i already thought about machining 2 aditional intake ports into the manifold, but doing the math i there isnt enough volume leading into the head to make it worth the effort., and like earlier posted it doesnt matter how much i let it breath in if it cant breath out. another reason why i dont believe the current head will work, because of the volume on the exit side of the head.

no im not just some dumb little 18 year old punk looking to turn some heads.
(I know no one has said it, but if i were reading this from the outside in, i would be thinking that myself)

The fun is in water skiing, tubing and general boat performance.
V8 is the only way to get more power.
Sell your carbs on eBay, or put them on a 292 in a pickup truck. Offenhauser makes a manifold for automotive 3X2 on a 230/250/292/

Boat engines turn too slow for that much fuel.

Actually I wasn't thinking that at all....:D

I am interested in how you would get more exhaust "flow" though.

That's a real limitation in all marine engines.

Pretty much ALL the "go-fast" boats have open (thru-hull) or "dry" exhaust......if you have thru-prop exhaust, you are quite limited.

Is this a stern drive? Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo?

If it's an "inboard" V-drive etc, and you're "open" or exposed engine, you can do almost anything you want........automotive carb, dist, alt, dry exhaust system, manifold, etc...

If the engine is completely enclosed, you are much more limited as far as non-"marine" components are concerned.

You can do a search on this forum for "Automotive" parts, starters, EFI, etc, and you'll find long rambling posts on the pros and cons, legality, arguments, plus/minus etc......A lot of these threads become like "oil threads" and get personal.....and then they get locked! (shoot.....this thread may turn into one of those!!!!)

The bottom line is, you have an engine that is not well (or at all) supported by the high performance marine industry. This means that you have to fabricate everything to do what you want.

It doesn't mean you "can't" but it probably means that it won't be very cost effective.

Re: looking for a merc 165 head

Im thinking about making my next project building a 20 to 21 ft 55mph boat on a budget of $4,000 to $5,000. One of the power plants im thinking about is the 165 because its easy to get your hands on, ease to re-build, and its over all size, (dimensional) but its just one of the ones im thinking about.

as far as the exhaust, im only abut 90% sure it will work, and would like to keep it under my hat, (only for now) so that some kid doesnt try it and .......well you know BOOM
all in all the final project is for a different thread. If i can figure out a way to get the six pack to work, i believe thats the direction i would like to go. but i also am making sure that im not pissing in the wind.

The build will be not just a running boat, but one that looks as good as it runs.
