I am looking to get a new prop for my 1996 115hp Johnson Oceanrunner V4. It is on a 17 ft Four Winns with a semi deep V Fiberglass hull. Its a little sluggish out of the hole.

It currently has a 14x19 Aluminum Prop
WOT - 5100rpm
Speed - 41MPH
Trimmed with just me onboard.
37MPH with four people

I am looking for an all around good prop for cruising as well as good at getting out of the hole. Maybe a SS?

Also I have a 300 SE Hydrofoil. Do you think it is worth installing it?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Your RPM is too low.

I had a 17" BRP Rogue 4-blade stainless, it turned 5700 rpm at WOT, 46 mph on my 17' Silverline 1700 bowrider.

What was your MPH with the 4 blades?

I disagree. While 5100 is a little bit low, it is not that bad.

5700 will blow his motor. WOT RPM on that motor is 4500 - 5500. 5100 to 5200 is fine.

Try running a 13.25x17. My 17' FourWinns with Johnson 115 came 14x19. The 13.25x17 is great.

With myself alone or 1 more
WOT - 5200rpm
Speed - 43MPH

With 4 or more
WOT - 5000rpm
Speed - 40MPH

Riptide- do you have a ss or alum? 3 or 4 blade? How is your preformance out of the hole?

Also would a 14.25x17 lower the rpms or raise them at wot?

A 17 would raise the rpms.

If you are sure you are trimmed in completely and this problem is not new an not due to extra weight, then you need to go with the 17 pitch prop

3 Blade Aluminum. Prop is OEM (by OEM I mean it is a Johnson/Evinrude Bomardier prop). Prop was on the boat when I got it.

Performance out of the hole is good. It jumps up fast and I plane out quick. The only time I have problems is with heavy load not distributed. I was out on Sunday and had 5 in the boat including myself. All in the back, none on the front. Took a bit longer to plane it out than if 1 or 2 people had been up front.

I tow tubers and skiers a lot and have no complaints.

I have the 3 Blade Aluminum 14x19 that came on the boat and many times I have thought about tossing it on to see how it performs but there are a few dings and chips in it and I don't want to drop $90 to get it fixed when I am happy with the 13.25x17

Re: Looking for a new prop for Johnson 115 Oceanrunner V4

it sounds like the same diameter 17 pitch prop would solve your problems and bring your WOT up to 5400-5500 of course this is your "Ski" prop and not your "Speed" prop so if its just you and the wife you could change it out to lower your RPM's when just cruising. One question, when running 41 MPH at the 5100 rpm's are you all out or are you all out then back off a few RPM's? Personally I dont like to hold my motor at max strain for extended periods of time. I would rather get up to speed then back off a bit to a Cruising speed. You should find that there is a place (sweet spot) where your motor is happy not working its butt off to maintain a couple of MPH. when you find this spot you will find that fuel consumption will go down. Just what I have found. It will depend on water conditions and load of course.

OK, I realized that his Oceanrunner and my Intruder are slightly different beasts, even if they have the same block (I'm assuming gsly13 has the 60-degree 115)

My owners manual says 6000 is the upper limit.

I based my comments on max WOT on 1 data points. My data point was from the Piranha Propeller Outboard Motor Database. According to that DB a '96 Oceanrunner is 4500-5500. The '96 115 Faststrike is 5000-6000 however all other 115 for '96 are 4500-5500.

Re: Looking for a new prop for Johnson 115 Oceanrunner V4

I have a 1995 115 ocean runner and a 1997 90 hp ocean pro. since they are my main motors i digest everything I can find about them. they are both the same style as the OP, 60 degree eagle motors. I have found dozens of thread where guys have said those motors love the high rpms... 5800-6000

I know for some reason the WOT on the faststrike and intruders of the same years and carbed...called for 500 more rpms....I dont think the gearing was different, but it might have been...

I was running 5400 on my OMC 14" X 17 aluminum prop at 37 mphs

I put on an OMC 13-3/4" X 15 SS prop on the boat and it screamed to 6200 rpms at 39 mph...

I left that prop on because i expect to load the boat for actual nomal use and sure enough the rpms fell to 5800.....

I hit the prop twice and bent my prop shatf so i personally wont use another SS prop... but for you guys who stay in channels and deep water...

a nice SS is ideal...

there is NOT a lot of props to find in the small gear case V4 catergory....

I could never find anything larger in dia than 14"

so if you do, make sure it fits your gear case

small gear case(4" dia) 13 spline!!

the larger case was 4-5/8" dia and usually had 15 splines.

ther eis actually room to fit a 15.5 " prop under the cav plate!!!

but no one make it that i could find..

normally for guys who run a lot at WOT more oil is recomended in the gas( I premix)

I found once on plane i actually gained 1-2 MPH playing with the trim...it went out more than I expected and pick up rpms and speed...

I have flotation pods on the back of my boat and they are angles down just slightly and act as trim tabs as well as give me drag....other wise id be going faster.

but i love them for staying flat and running the shallows

good luck

I have two brand new aluminum 13-3/4" X 19 props i

i doubt ill ever go with that much pitch

Re: Looking for a new prop for Johnson 115 Oceanrunner V4

ps my manual say the GL( i think the intruder is a GL) has the same gear ratio as the SL( ocean runner)

the ex and sx( extra long gear cases) has .44 gearing

the EL GL and SL all had .500 gearing

Mine is actually a 1998 Ficht Intruder. I've tried two SS 4-blade BRP Rogue props on it, a 17 and a 15 inch pitch (both had a diameter of 13" I think).

With the 17" the engine ran at about 5700 rpm at 46mph. If I was only going to keep one prop, this would be it. However I plan to have two props - one for wakeboarding/tubing and one for cruising, so I exchanged the 17" for a 15", and will probably get a Stiletto Advantage 17" for cruising.

The 15" Rogue gives the boat terrific holeshot (the 17" was good also, but I figured I might have a loaded boat on occasion). The 15" allows the motor to spin up to about 6100 at 42mph with just me in the boat. I will rarely (or never) run at full throttle with a light load with that prop.

I paid full price for the Rogue so I might appear a little unhinged seeking an additional SS prop (though the Siletto will be cheaper online, if I go that route).
