The 398.. number is a Mercury number.
You should be able to get one from Mercury.

What brand starter is the 174.. number?

Here is a link to your starter. At least it is for a 1995 120 HP Force. Starter
I dont know why you would need to replace the whole thing. Looks like if you just replaced the brushes it might fix the one you have

I think he meant stator. I will have to look when I get home but I think you have the correct number. Are you getting a CDI unit??

Re: Looking for a part number for stater

Sorry here as well. I thought it said starter. Roscoe I think the part number is from this crossreference However for a 1995 120 force the part given is 398-97-10A-45. This crosses over to 174-9710K1. Is the stator you pulled from your motor red or black?

If it is like my 95 it is black. Mine failed in less than 100 hrs use.
