tilt pins are quickly getting outdated and no longer available so im asking everyone out there no matter what motor you have.

if you have a removable tilt pin that fits 10mm or 3/8" hole and is at least 9 1/2" of usable shaft length not counting the handle or keeper then please let me know so I can order that part.

again I need a pin that is 10mm or 3/8" diameter and is 9 1/2" long not counting the keeper and handle

I really don't want to have to drill out my motor bracket to 1/2" size

thank you

Way too much trouble to find the right part. Go to a hardware store and buy a 3/8" rod, cut it to length, drill a hole in each end and put in 2 clevis pins. Viola, 15 min. job.

At worst, buy a 3' section of threaded rod and put a locknut on each end. Even if you use cad plated carbon steel and it eventually rusts, for $3 you'll have enough left for 4 more.

If you have a metal dealer in your local yellow pages .....go buy a piece of stainless. The other option is to try ebay but people get big money for them.

so just a plain old solid rod of 3/8" steel will be best?

I thought it needed to at least be hardened steel or something so it wouldn't get bent and possibly jammed in place?

I definitely don't want to use the threaded rod because its so soft I can bend that with just my hands plus the threads will gouge all the paint off of the motor where it touches.

I guess the trim pins are all based on a standard 1/2" size anyway because that's the only size I can find them in.

ok I just bought a 304 stainless steel 3/8" rod 12" long for $7.50 ($2 and something for the rod plus twice that for shipping lol) so that should do me

just need to figure out if I want to heat up and bend one end over  or make or try to find a handle to fit it. im thinking of something like those old fashioned turn signal replacement handles that will fit over the shaft tightly

is 304 machinable? if so, thread the rod and put a locknut on it

hmmm

thanks, that is a good idea

304 has to be machinable since its what most ss bolts are made of, just not sure what type of dye you would need to thread it

Re: looking for a tilt pin from any brand or age motor that will fit my motor

I made my own kicker steering rod out of 3/8" 314. I turned the end to the size needed for the nuts I had, and then threaded it with a regular old pipe threader. I needed to put a fitting on the end, so I HAD to thread it. in your case, for the work needed, I'd sooner drill a hole in each end. I WOULDN'T try to bend it - it would likely crack in 2.

im going to try to jam a chevy gear shift knob on the end of it

its a tight fit on the 3/8" shaft and its some kind of plastic rubber so it should last, if not it only cost $4 and if it works it will look like it was factory

if it doesn't work I will just use a clip on each end as suggested

thanks for the help guys

Drill out each end and put some stainless steel clips through it and be done with it.

glad you got stainless; the earlier posts were clearly from lake boaters!

You could put a wad of JB weld on one end, hose clamps over rubber on the other. No one's looking back there.

OMC's have a spring at the turned end to keep the open end's fitting tight against the frame.

Boat junk yard would have been a source next time you need something like this. Bet they'd mail it to you.

well the gear shift knob split on me, it would have worked but I got lazy and didn't predrill it and it was too tight a fit. it was just a hair too small so predrilling it would have been a perfect fit.

I drilled one end and put a snap clip on that end and shoved a short 3/8 fuel line hose on the other end to use as a handle, no need for a spring IMO.

well the problem is those are all 1/2" size and AFAIK the power trim motors now only use 3/8" holes with buttons that bolt into it for the trim stops so if I drilled the existing holes out to use the 1/2" pins then it would be very close to nothing left there. they just aren't made as beefy as the old style mounts are.

as for buying used, they want the same price as new ones cost so if I were to buy it, I would buy a new OEM part for $20 before paying that same $20 for a used part plus shipping for something weathered and worn. deciding on what would be the correct part number to buy would be the only problem.

you know, galvanized bolts always did fine for me. Problem was that the nuts would vibrate off if i didn't use a cotter pin. Galvanized is what they use to build docks and boat lifts with. The local hardware store sells them dirt cheap in various lengths from 8" to 20".

seems like a lot of work here to avoid spending $20

its not about avoiding spending $20

I was replying to another poster who was trying to help me, he suggested I buy a used pin off the internet which is a good idea but I had already looked and they were all priced at around $20 but I also priced those same pins (if bought brand new from the parts website) and they were also $20 so why pay new prices for used parts when you can still order the parts new for the same price?

does it all make sense now?

that's ebay. some sellers put up a permanent listing at a highest price and then wait for a customer who either doesn't know or doesn't care what it costs elsewhere. I call it chainsaw pricing. $750 seems unreasonable for a chainsaw unless you just had an ice storm.
