You want a radio with 25watt transmit power, but no radio will go through rock. The antena will be where the money is, the higher the better. Im sure you will get other opinons. Satilite radio?, or phone, might be your best option.

VHF operates point-to-point. There has to be direct line of sight as they don't operate with repeaters. That will determine the functionality of your radio. Proper connections and a quality antenna on a quality radio will be your best bet all around.

All VHF Marine Band radios sold in the USA will meet the FCC required performance specification. Radios are not self-aware and they don't know where they are being operated; they work the same no matter where you use them. The Laws of Physics remain the same no matter where you are, too. If you are worried about your range of communication, install a good antenna and locate it as high as possible on your boat.

I prefer VHF Marine Band radios made by Standard-Horizon because:

--their operating controls are well designed and easy to use;

--the transmitter modulation is generally much better than competitors' radios

--their post-sale technical support is excellent.

For a good VHF Marine Band antenna installation for a small boat, see my article:
