I just bought a 2001 Glastron with the SX outdrive and it has been stored in the water (fresh water). The paint on the outdrive is starting to flake off and those flaked parts are slightly corroded. A quick Google search turned up spray cans from west marine and youtube how to videos.

Any thoughts on this tactic? Is this a touch up job I can do on my own with a spray can or do these need be professionally redone? It doesn't need to perfect I'm just looking for a decent job. Thank you in advance.

you will need self etching primer for the aluminum. However you can repaint it yourself with a spray can or a Preval sprayer.

I had paint mixed last time with hardner in it in a rattle can from my local PPG supplier.

Ayuh,.... Once a year or so, I brush the dried junk off the drive, 'n walk 'round my Merc with a rattlecan of Rustoleum black,...

It lives in Lake Ontario from 'bout April til, well, Soon, every year,...

It ain't pretty, but it's holdin' up real well,...

I had the same problem on my SX. I ended up sanding down the entire drive, hit it with a couple of coats of self etching primer from a rattle can, then hit it with the closest grey enamel I could find to the factory volvo color, and then hit it with a couple of coats of clear coat (all from rattle cans from Tractor Supply). Been holding up fine all summer with zero paint loss.
If I have to repeat this every few years so be it.

I do the rustoleum thing for my prop....gloss black....just so I can clean up any sanded areas from our super-shallow fishing spots.
Holds up just fine.

I'll be doing the same for my drive this year too....but just filing/sanding front edges of the skeg clean (very minor dings), and some other areas on the drive that have a tiny bit of wear. Then self-etching primer, and color-matching with rattle cans of rustoleum or krylon...and maybe even the rustoleum "engine" paint that's chemically resistant...or the rustoleum "professional" silver can stuff at home depot.

I've got my cylinders/rams off too....maybe should bling those up in some contrasting hot pink or something....
