I have a 4.3 MPI Merc in a H190 Fourwinns. Looking for an all around prop to get some good top end speed but still some jam to pull up a waterskier. Can anybody help me with their own experience?

Can you post the wide open throttle (WOT) rpm's, your current type of prop (aluminum or stainless steel), the prop pitch and the lower unit gear ratio and type of unit. I assume it is an alpha drive? These will help.

Sorry was daydreaming and forgot info. Its an Alpha 1 with a 1.82 ratio. I have used a merc Vengence 14 inch diameter and 19 p. Its the closest I can get with 4700WOT and 46 MPH. I would like a bit more speed and find a prop with PVS plugs to help with hole shot. I just tried a Mirage by merc 19 pitch and 15.25 diameter. Too much prop as I could only get 4200WOT. Never tried a 4 blade but have used 5 blade but not enough speed for me. I was thinking a merc enertia 19 pitch. I think more rake and less cupping than a mirage but I have never seen one up close. None of the dealers out of Edmonton Alberta stock many props. Hard to compare and even harder to find ones to try. Dont know much about other breeds so thats why I'm here.

I forgot to add I was full fuel and two people in it. Boat did seem a bit gutless and changing fuel filter but only 50 hours on her so Im sure thats not an issue.

What year,what hp.EFI? I found 4 models 3 were 1.62 ratio,one was 1.81.
The numbers don't add up with 1.82 Less than 1% slip average is about 10%.
1.62 works at about 11%.
Regardless of that a 4.3 in a 19 footer with a 19" pitch would do really well, possibly over revving.
Is this a deep V heavy boat?
Is the bottom clean and smooth? Are you sure the throttle opens all the way?

Your close to the top of the WOT now; 4800 if I remember correctly. Is the speed from the speedo or are you using GPS? If using GPS you are about at the top for speed unless you lighten it up alot. My other boat had a 4.3 and it ran 4800 rpm's with approximately 10 gallons of fuel and 4 adults with a 19 pitch and the same gear ratio....on a calm day and it did about the same speed. If you want to try a different prop you can but I would go to a dealer or prop. shop that will let you try BEFORE you buy.

Re: Looking for best all around prop for 4.3 MPI on H190 Fourwinns

HI there. Thanks for the time. This is a 2012 MPI Merc rates it at 220hp The boat is a fourwinns 2012 SS190. The boat weighs 2650 ibs dry. The bottom is clean and perfect. It is a 1.81 ratio. I own quite a bit of equipment and I start to get my numbers mixed up. I did look at the throttle and it was fine. Seems like I lost a bit of power after I took the boat in to dealer for 20 hour service after I bought it. Thought I would let them do it and check for codes. I took it back to them but they went over it and saw no issues. I changed oil again to a good synthertic in case they had a flunky in the shop and put in some heavy oil. I should have changed fuel filter before I wenty out last time but its so tight I need different filter wrench to get it off. I did pull the battery cables for a while to see if computer would reset. Not sure if that works with this type of engine to reboot engine computer. As far as prop I can't over rev with a vengence 14 inch diameter and 19 pitch. Not even if I'm alone with low fuel and nothing in boat. Thought it should. Still wondering about a n enertia 19 pitch or a 4 blade rev 4 put out by merc.

Re: Looking for best all around prop for 4.3 MPI on H190 Fourwinns

I am close to max revs alone in boat but if I load up four people with that much fuel. no tower on boat with the vengence 19 pitch 14 dia. I would be lucky to get 4500 RPM and 43 MPH I did try all the dealers and even said I would pay for a trial and would leave credit card so if I dinged it I would buy it. No takers. The dealer I bought it from has let me try a few different ones so that has been good but not much of a selection. The boat rev limiter is 4950.

Re: Looking for best all around prop for 4.3 MPI on H190 Fourwinns

There is nothing wrong with your boat. The 4.3L is doing exactly what it's supposed to do; it's turning 4700 rpm with a light load and 200 rpm less with a fair load.

That's all it's going to do with that heavier ( than some) boat.

A 19 ft Larson with the same power did 47 MPH using a 14.25X21 aluminum prop. A 19 ft Chaparral did 48 mph with a 14.5X19 aluminum prop.

Maybe you should switch to aluminum. Solas and Turning Point aluminum props can out perform some SS props. Most SS props really only work better in the higher mounting situation. Fully submerged, they can actually load the engine more, and not work as well as some of the well designed aluminum props.

Re: Looking for best all around prop for 4.3 MPI on H190 Fourwinns

I still wonder about your numbers as stated 14 X 19 your slip is less than 1% , highly unlikely 10% being more typical.
Perhaps your dealer will let you use a shop tach to verify the rpm.
Not likely to be wrong on a new boat but something is up.Perhaps the ratio is wrong or your prop size
not actually a 19. The Solas Amita 3 blade has a good reputation for an inexpensive prop.
The Turning Point Hustler is an al prop with close to ss performance.
Have you contacted Fourwinns about the expected performance? Is the 19" the suggested size?
