This is a shot in the dark but I am hoping someone in the general forum may be able to answer my question.

I have a 1960's Car Top Fisherman made by MFG. I cannot find a HIN on the transom. The boat has been painted several times and aircraft paint remover is not working well at all. The USCG website indicates that boats manufactured after 1972 required the HIN. It also indicates the HIN should be on the boat in two locations, on the exterior of the transom and also inside the hull in a non-visable location.

Fiberglassic adds indicate this boat was built prior to 1968 because it does not have the built-in live well in the middle seat. I called TP&W and the lady said that a serial number search for MFG did not bring up any boats from the 60's so this is good.

1. Am I looking for a HIN that does not exist, ie, pre-1972?

2. If you know the this boat had a HIN, where was it located?

3. Was it on a data plate or engraved?

4. If there was a duplicate HIN on the inside of the boat, where was it?

Thanks in advance, I am tearing my hair out trying to register and title this boat.

Thanks, I have reviewed the MFG forum and Fiberglassics. Neither can answer my questions so I am looking for current or prior owners. SV

Hi SV My '61 Oxford Didn't have any sign of one either. Even if it did the format would most likely not match USCG format started in '72. The P.O. had a hin re-issued by Mass authorities (13character starting MSZ) MS for state,
Z designates re-issue. I made a plate of stamped alu and afixed it and epoxied it's edges. No problems yet. Check to see if your state allows the same.
