I have an Evinrude 120 E120TLEIE, think it's from 1996. Owned it for almost 3 years and runs perfect. This spring after the first landlocked salmon trip my buddy and I noticed a sort of clanky tapping sound very slight but I'm super sensitive to engine sounds. I did change the gear oil right before the trip and it had a good sheen of metal. Hadn't actually changed it in a while so thought maybe I just waited too long. Now I'm wondering if the sound was from the lower unit. Seems like more metal than normal in the oil. Posting a picture of the old oil, I drained it. Filled it back up and drained and filled again. That was a month ago. I just dumped the pan of oil and the whole bottom of the pan is a fine metal sheen. Trying to upload photos but so far they are all too big! Also in gear I can move the prop back and forth almost 2". Is it time to remove the lower unit and tear it down?
