I'm looking into buying a brand new Tohatsu or Evinrude 40 hp motor. In your opinion, which do you believe is an overall better motor regardless of price? If you own one of these, please list any major issues you have had
Thanks!

Both are very good outboards, RW. I believe that the E-TEC technology is ahead of the Tohatsu, so that would be my choice.

First consideration would be a close well established servicing dealer.
Read what you will into this The 40 & 50 Etec is 240 lbs,52 cu in. has an amazing 2.62 gear ratio and a 13" prop is a monster 13 3/4" in diameter.
I didn't see a 40 TLDI, The 50 Tohatsu 206 lbs 42 cu in.,has a 1.85 gear ratio and a 13" prop is 11 1/8" in diameter. My guess is the etec would have an amazing hole shot and big awkward boat types and weights would be cake for the etec.
The Tohatsu would be perfect and at ease on a typical application.

Having owned both brands, previously a 2007 Etec 150hp H.O. and currently a 2011 50hp TLDI, I suggest the ETEC. I had zero problems with the ETEC in the 4 years I owned it. I sold my boat to purchase a smaller one and after much consideration went with a Tohatsu TLDI for price/weight and my previous positive experience with an old Tohatsu 40hp carburated. I have had a lot of problems with this TLDI motor from the start and the dealer in my area was not knowledgable on repairs to this motor, despite his praises of the motor when selling it to me. I had to research my problems on this board and elsewhere to solve the problem and then explain it to my dealer so they could call tohatsu and pry the info out of them. These TLDI motors have vapor lock issues that can make it very difficult to start the motor when its hot. The fix is a band aid fix by Tohatsu adding an external fuel pump to the motor. The performance of my 50 TLDI is not impressive either. Even though my problems now seem to be solved with the motor, I would never buy another one due to the issues I have had.
