Looking for opinions on 07 four winns horizon 200

Just sold my first boat i owned which was a 88 sea ray Seville with the idea of upgrading this summer. I just stumbled upon a 2007 Four Winns Horizon 200 Bowrider with the 5.0 GL Volvo. Looking for opinions both good and bad on this boat and motor. I’m not familiar with the Volvo since last boat was a Merc. Is the 5.0 fuel injected or carburated? (no pic of the motor) Also would like to know how easy or difficult routine maintenance is on the Volvo compared to the Merc. Oil changes, winterizing, impeller, bellows etc? Thanks in advance

5.0gl is carb from Volvo. Gli I think it TBI and gxi is multi point.
would all depend on the cost of it for me. At that age and a certain price range...I might be wanting a gxi MPi engine in such a boat...unless it’s much cheaper than any other in the market.

The only negative thing I can think of is on Volvo SX-A drives the trim pump housing may need to be upgraded to design 2. Design 1s were prone to leaking. In Canada the new housing is about 700.00 so maybe 400-500 ish US

The negative on a Volvo is that nobody wants to work on them, whereas everybody works on a Merc. If you have a local dealer/mechanic then that won't be the case.

Its not the engine or the mechanic, its the parts availability for the Volvo specific components. But then again its a regional thing. In my area only 1 dealer than sells Volvos.

Its not that they can't be sourced, it's just that Merc parts are on the shelf and don't need to be ordered.

And Volvo is more $$$ for same part that would be used on a Merc. Here's an example I experienced when having my Volvo serviced...

Fuel pump went on my 5.0GXi. Cost, including installation - $1000. Not kidding. Marina damn near fell over when they heard their price on it. Why you ask?

Fuel pump for a Merc was $100. Same model year, same engine displacement.

And no, the Merc and Volvo parts aren't interchangeable from what a few marinas told me.



In my neck of the woods, Volvo dealers are drying up. One marina told me why....Volvo makes it difficult/impossible to locate parts. You have to be willing to put the leg work in. Merc's are more plentiful, parts cheaper which is why I have one on my boat....and constantly get po'd about that darn shift interrupter! But that's for another time altogether.


IF, and that's a mighty big IF, you have a good marina that will service it, then by all means the Volvo is a notch ahead of Merc having owned both now. Volvo is smoother and does not have that stupid shift interrupter.

You might be surprised. I had an issue that required a marina to correct it with my Volvo. I was in 1000 Islands NY, large boating community with basically a marina on every corner. No one, and I do mean no one who was a merc certified shop would touch the engine. Even though its a chevy block, the systems are different and they didn't want the liability.
