I have an eighty something 18.5 hourston with a Volvo penta aq 140 and a 270 drive. I am thinking of replacing the carbs ?dual solex ?with the weber single carb conversion kit.I was also thinking if I am going this far I might as well put a new ignition system in it as well. The thing I am wondering is am I just throwing good money away or would this be a worthwhile endeavor. as the boat sits right now i don't use it due to the fact i can't restart it if it stalls on me in the water. i want something i can depend on at least to restart for me while on the water. if there is anyone who has done this conversion or knows of someone who has done this? are they happy with what they have done? Some people have told me that i should replace the motor which i don't really want to do. Although if i am just wasting my money on these repairs i don't really have a choice. thanks for any and all opinions

You may as well take it to a volvo mechanic and have him go through it. That is a reliable setup. For the money you want to throw at it in parts, a good shop could give it a once over to check for any signs of problems with the drive and motor.

I had an older two carb setup. Those carbs are not to tough to clean up.

Why do you want to go to one carb?

The solex is one of the simplest carbs on the planet and far more reliable that a weber.

i have tried to setup the carbs on the boat and lost the battle. i think i will take it to a dealer and see what they say about setting them up. i have heard that these carbs have to be readjusted alot though. did you find that problem with them and if this is the case should i buy a sink tool "not sure of the name" and learn how to use it.

It was a long time ago. It seems to me I bought the rebuild kits, took them apart, cleaned them up and put back together and it ran good. I did no sync.

You shouldn't have to readjust your carbs all the time, what adjustment there is. Do you have a manual? that would help.

I believe you have some other issues with that motor that could be contributing a rough idle etc.

You said in a previous post you had a bad cylinder. I would not spend another boating season fighting with your carbs when one of four cylinders is not functioning properly. With any luck you've got a valve issue. A shop could tell you that. Good Old fasioned valve job (If it is a valve problem).

I keep saying take to the shop, maybe you could do the work your self. Are you a good mechanic?

Re: looking for opinions

The AQ140 was manufactured from 1975 to 79. Not an 80's engine, so be careful of what year the boat is said to be.
I doubt the weber replacement will help any. Do you have a problem, or just wanting to tinker with it?
