Looking for Service Manual for 1980 OMC 200hp GM

With that being said. Ive aquired a 1980 Hawaiian I/O with a 200hp OMC sterndrive 800 and a 2brl Rochester carb

Model Numbers

Engine 990267C
Outdrive 982435

The motor seems to be well taken care of and has only 60 hours clocked on the gauge.

I have no previous history information regarding winterization. The interior is shot, but motor seems almost as good as new.

I would like to get this boat up and running for this season.

Could anyone provide me with a checklist of things to check/replace/repair before doing a sea test?


I am mechanically inclined, and can do or have someone help me do the work myself.

A 37+ yr old boat w 60hrs, sounds unusually low.

A 'shot' interior may mean theres more work ahead then you expect.

A factory service manual will prove invaluable, the Seloc and other aftermarket manuals may not be

OMC has been out of the I/O market for a long time. Sourcing parts can be a challenge.....

my guess is that the hour meter was replace a few times

average usage on a boat is 50 hours per year 10 hours on a bad year. you should have between 500 and 2000 hours on the hour meter. too low of hours is worse than too many hours

your 1980 could be a 1979 or it could be a 1980. its important because the 79 was electric shift the 1980 was hydro-mechanical shift

the 200hp is a GM 305 V8. nothing special

as JB pointed out a shot interior is a sign that there may be rotten structural issues. at least read link #14 in the DIY sticky in the restoration forum.

Seloc manuals make good knee pads. Ken Cook company was the original company printing manuals for OMC. they still do.

your stringer drive has one or two good things going for it, however the list of things against it is stagering. parts are becoming more difficult to get, there are only a few shops in the world that will still work on them, and the vertical split driveshaft splines will leave you stranded As JB pointed out, OMC has been OOB for 2 decades

I think your second number 982... is a part number for one of the casings on the outdrive. Base all of your part huntin' off the 990... number (engine).

If the engine starts and runs, and the drive shifts in and out of gear properly, then I would change the oil and the drive lubes. 1980 should be hyrdo-mechanical, and I think the electric shifts were done by '77 so you should be good there. After that, make sure the hull is solid and watertight. Then you're ready to float it for a shakedown run.

What'll happen after that is anyone's guess ...

I have a copy of a 1980 OMC factory manual. I can lend it out to copy but I NEED IT BACK. One thing to check is the swivel bearing seals. There is a grease zerk in the center of the drive on the Transom side, Grease it. When the seals get bad it will suck exhaust gasses in the cooling water and you will over heat,PM me for more information. Leave P/N I'll call.
