Greetings from the Kenmyfam cottage.
Motor would not start a couple of times over the last 2 days. Gave it a rest and it fired up no problem. Very smokey when fired up again and also when starting after sitting a while. came back on the electric troller this morning from fishing and tried again as soon as i got back. fired straight up with a huge cloud of 2 stroke smoke. Mixing at 50 to 1 as usual.
No obvious leaks anywhere, runs like a champ otherwise. Each time it would not fire up it had been tilted up for a while. Things checked so far,
Compression.....Good
Spark......will almost jump from the dock to the cottage.
Fuel delivery, excellent.
Plugs look oily but no carbon build up when checked after none start condition.
Performance is the same as ever when running.
Idles great at around 600 RPM
Same condition with or without the hood on when in the no start scenario.
Any suggestions will be very welcome.
Motor is a 1985 140HP Johnson Looper, VRO disconnected 2 years ago and running premix.
Thanks to all,
Ken.

P.S. Internet is terrible from here right now so I may not be able to respond but I will be watching.

If it only happens after it has been tilted, could you have a float problem in a carb or carbs allowing fuel to flow into the intake when motor is lowered and flooding engine?
Maybe try NOT tilting the engine after you get it started and see if it starts properly after sitting for awhile.

I'm with Daviet, carbs aren't sealing off when tilted up, possible float issue.

wouldnt that cause flooding???

I mean too much gas for the air volume is called FLOODING..isnt it?

also once the cylinder fired two maybe three times..the oily gas would have all been fired off....wouldnt it???

wondering

With all the smoke I would bet it is flooded. That could be caused by the needles not holding back the fuel. Best of luck and enjoy your vacation. Rick.

Re: Looking for thoughts on this one ??

Thanks for the responses. I have to agree with you but did not fancy tearing down the carb's while on vacation !!!!
Thoughts I had were that the fuel is evaporating off and leaving the oil in there causing the excessive smoking at start up.
It is smoking at start up after tilting and also after sitting a while.
Motor may stay down for the rest of out vacation !!!! and then do the rebuilds when I get home !!!!
It is really hot here as well, wondering if the fuel in the carb's is "boiling off" at motor shutdown leaving the oil there to "clog the works"
Just thoughts though.

Re: Looking for thoughts on this one ??

i am trying to understand this ..reason is my engine does the same thing in hot weather...if I tilt it up for long periods when using the electric motor..I get a lot of smoke at start up...now how does the gas go uphill when the motor is tilted...would it not run back into the engine compartment...

After the smokey part of the start up it runs fine after...no smoke...but can be hard to start at first...Like Kenny said it seems like it is more of a oil mix as if the gas evaporated and left more oil ..can the ethanol cause this fluke thing...

my engine is just a 1983 35hp..but kinda the same thing happens as Kenny's motor after its on tilt a while....never a problem when its cool out just when hot out...

don't tear them down, disconnect fuel line before tilting. they will drain, but not flood the motor.

there is no quick disconnect on either of my mid 90's OMC V4's

they are both permanently clamped lines....

Re: Looking for thoughts on this one ??

Just got back to the cottage. left right after my last post. Everyone is ski and tubed out. Our boat I think is the glue that keeps this family together !!!:D
Absolutely wonderful day once again !!:D Even had the dog tubing today !!! (with some heavy socks and a life jacket though) 90 plus degrees again and with the humidity it just has to be in the 100's !!!
Our fuel line is permanently plumbed at present but after TD's response you can bet it will be on a connector in the morning. Thanks my friend I will be following your advice.:)
Huge "Thank you" to everyone that has made a response here.
No issues at all today other than being smokey at start up after sitting for a while. Having said that the motor has been running for most of the day today !!
Well, it is time to "fire up the BBQ" and feed them all again.
Will be posting a lot of photos (and a video of the "smoke screen at start up") when i get home and have a decent internet connection
Thanks again everyone,
Ken and Family.

Re: Looking for thoughts on this one ??

Ruled out the tilting now as it is doing it after shutting down after extended (10 minutes plus) of trolling. We trolled for the last 10 minutes into town today for groceries, beer and liquor store, gas etc through the no wake zone. Would not start, removed the plugs and spun the motor over for about 10 seconds. replaced plugs and she fired right up first time with a lot of smoke. As soon as it cleared we trolled the 10 minutes out of town, blasted back to the cottage and although smokey again at first start this morning has run like a champ again.
