Looking to buy used boat

Have been "considering" boat purchase for 2-3 years. We would probably use it 6-8 times a year. Main concern is reliability as I have seen some hefty issues on this site, I am thinking a boat purchase is a crap shoot. We are looking for a 18-20 ft bow rider. Would like something that rides fairly smooth but can tow a skier, wakeboard, etc. I think I need to limit it to no older than 1997. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JPD :D

JD - Welcome - The most reliable boat you can get your hands on belongs to your neighbor. If your neighbor dosen't have one you might consider rentals with your low planned usage. When they break - they fix - emphasis on they.

If you are determined - spend some time reading like posts here and even better spend time at your local boat ramp talking to folks who have the kind of rig that appeals to you.

JPD:

As SoLittle has pointed out, you will probably get more reliable info (instead of a sales pitch) buying direct. I would recommend you look for a one-owner boat from someone who is meticulous about keeping their boat clean and serviced regularly. Those kind of people almost always have records to back up their claims that the boat was well-cared for.

If you want a family-friendly, gas-conserving, easy to run and pretty reliable motor, look for a Yamaha 4-stroke. My stepdad's boat has one and he hasn't had a single problem in 5 years. On the other hand, my dad's old Mariner and my older Evinrude.....

Good luck and welcome to the fishing community!
