Good Morning. I have a 99 Mercruiser engine 4.3 litre V6. I'm looking to install a new starter and have found conflicting specs in service manual 25. In section 3, the torque noted for the starter bolts is 50 lb-ft. If you look in section 4 there is a spec given there for 30 lb-ft. They both appear to be for the same bolts. Do you know why there are two different specs given for the same starter bolts. Both specs appear to be for the PG260F1 starter motor. Which spec would you use?

In all honesty, I've never used a torque wrench to tighten any starter bolts, either auto or marine. I just tighten them down by feel. In most cases, there isn't enough room in the engine bay/bilge area to work with a torque wrench. I know this doesn't help much, but just tighten them based on how difficult it was to loosen them. I haven't been on here as much as some, but I know enough about working on cars to say that you ALWAYS want to use a torque wrench if possible. I've seen too many fastener failures due to laziness or unavailability of the correct tools.

Most of the Merc manauls do/say this, go with the 30 lb-ft for your starter motor mounting bolts.
