Howdy,
I have a 1986 Mercruiser Alpha One, which I had a Sierra lower end put on in September of 2010. I had hit a rock and had a insurance claim, which they paid for a new "rebuild" unit.
I have changed the oil in the drive every year at the end of the season, and this year, I had a issue with the mechanic noticing metalic fuzz on the plug. When I had them replace the water pump impeller, they noticed the lower end was not smooth, and when they pulled it apart, they didn't find a piece of metal floating around, but indication of something rounding off stuff, and looks like it is done. They called Sierra and they said we could send it in to be looked at, and they might pro-rate it under their warranty.
Not sure what I want to do, to ship it to Sierra, then find out they might pay for part of it, or just get another unit, sell the current case and shafts. The original lasted from 1986 to 2010........
Looking into the options I have. The good news, at least we made it through the entire boat season with no issues. I will say I had no indication of problems, but when I went down today and checked out the parts, I am glad we caught it!!!
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Enjoy
Bob
