I see these terms mentioned quite frequently on the board and have wondered what the differences are between the two types. I guess from what I have read my 1996 Evinrude 130 is a looper?

I believe yours is a loop charged OB.Cross flow motors are good, but hard on gas...especially at WOT. They also tend to carbonize quicker on modern fuel. I think the modern J/E loopers are superior...just my opinion.

They're all hard on gas.. The loopers has more torque and HP for a given block size. They're both good motors. Loop charged are the newer motors (generally > 1985)

Loop charged motors are more efficient and have less reciprocating weight. Low reciprocating weight is one reason a chainsaw can rev so high without flying apart.
