1986 Evinrude 140

Been chasing a bogging/stalling problem during acceleration for a long time. Carbs have been thoroughly dismantled and cleaned (several times), carb kits installed, new fuel pump, new fuel lines, carb side plates checked and double checked, etc.

As a "what have I got to lose" last ditch try at fixing the problem, I adjusted the carb floats such that when turned upside down they went about 1/16th of an inch beyond level with edge of the float chamber.

The result was that instead of a bog and stall, I now have a brief hesitation, but no stall. Didn't have time to do any more adjusting, but am thinking the next chance I get, I'm going to adjust the floats another 1/16th to see what happens.

Any problems associated with doing this?

Thanks,

Brew

Re: Looper Carb Float

Not an uncommon problem. Especially if the boat gets bow high on acceleration. The fuel will slosh away from the pick up. It can be corrected by just as you've done. Adjust the float so there's more fuel in the bowl. However, if you go too far you'll have carbs overflowing.

Now, here's another point -- soem carbs use a plastic washer under the seat, some don't. If your carbs have a raised boss where the seat screws in, you don't need a washer. If it's completely flat, you'll need the washer that comes with the needle & seat.

Thanks guys.

Dhadley....saw your reference to that washer in a previous post. Checked for that on the weekend and I'm good....raised boss, no washer.

I guess I just keep playing with the float and hopefully find a spot that prevents the hesitation, but doesn't overflow the carb.

Thanks again everyone.

Cheers.

Also don't be afraid to play with the air jets a little. Those carbs are calibrated for 1985 fuel. We don't have that anymore.

And make sure you never run it under a load with the airbox cover off.

Re: Looper Carb Float

Hi Okam,

It will probably be 2 to 3 weeks before I will be able to do anymore trouble shooting on my motor. I plan on playing with the floats to see what happens. If I can't find a float level that eliminates the problem, then I'm going to look at reducing the size of the intermediate jet 3 or 4 sizes to see if that helps.

I'll definitely post back the results, but like I said, it will probably be several weeks from now.

Cheers,

Brew
