I have a 19-6 aquasport and was thinking of repowering from a mid 80s crossflow 150 to a 91 120 looper

What would be difference be in performance of the two engines. The looper is a v4 and weighs less will that offset the 30hp loss. Does that even matter cause the v4 is a looper

I don't think you'll notice much difference to be honest...I do think you will see better fuel economy though, but you'll be back to the 13 spline smaller diameter props.

Thats ok as I really want the better economy, I felt the lighter weight plus a looper would be about equal. I think the boat will handle better as it feels a little heavy in the rear now

Re: looper vs crossflow

THE LOOPER WAS DESIGNED TO BE A BEEFY ENGINE. AS SUCH IS WEIGHS 365, AT 120 CUBIC INCHES. IT IS HORSEPOWER RATED AT THE PROPSHAFT. THE OLDER CROSSFLOW WEIGHS IN THE 400 LBS RANGE, AND IS 149 CUBIC INCHES. IF IS IS AN EARLY 80'S IT WAS CRANKSHAFT RATED, WHICH IS A BIG DIFFERENCE. MID 80'S ENGINES CHANGED TO PROPSHAFT RATINGS, PERHAPS IN 1984. YOU WILL NOT HAVE THE TORQUE OF THE 150. CUBIC INCHES IS POWER. IT WILL RUN SLOWER THAN THE OLDER CROSSFLOW.

The 1984 is 2.6L...the 1983 was the 2.5L, 149 cuber.
The looper has the torque the crossflow is missing....

Re: looper vs crossflow

My motor is the 2.5 v6 and the looper is the bigbore 2.0ltr motor. Plus the design differences I feel it will run as good or better than my crossflow. My crossflow never really reached full potential as it could only muster 5400 rpm and 44 mph with a 17 pitch prop. The new motor has a 15 pitch prop and when I get it mounted I will post the results. It will be fun to see the difference in power as well as handling and economy

I want to see your results. If you remember, we had similar boats, motors and problems. I never was able to get more RPMs out of mine either.
I eneded up with 5400, 44 and 17 on my cross flow also.

Yes I will post the results as soon as I get it on and run it in the spring.

I just got the motor today and it looks great except for the shipping company crushed the hood
