I have a 1976 Merc 110 9.8 HP. The problem that I am having is that it is real loose. Meaning, if I let go of the tiller, it will turn hard to the right/left. Is there a tension screw somewhere on the motor to tighten it.

At WOT it is fine, but idling the problem is real bad... basicially, I cannot troll with the motor. how do I tighten it down so I can let go of the tiller.

Re: Loose 9.8

At the top of the clamp bracket assembly there should be a bolt head sticking out, centered between the clamps. The bolt is vertical, on the flat of the swivel bracket. There's only one in the vicinity. It's called a co-pilot bolt and acts on a friction plate in the swivel. It's possible yours is missing, broken, worn, etc., but it should be there...

- Scott
