Motor...197O's Mercury 115 Hp Outboard.

I am not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but I need to ask it. I was just going through the motor the other day tightening and adjusting and noticed a bolt half way down the lower unit that had come all the way loose. In fact it wasn't even on the threads. The bolt is very flat and about an inch wide. I noticed that there was a small gap where the lower unit attaches to the motor and you could see some of the grease. It also made a sticky noise if I moved the lower unit back and forth. A thin metal rod runs through the bolt, and that is the only thing that kept the bolt from falling in the water. I tightened it back up really good and noticed that the lower unit sucked back up into that greasy seal I noticed. I have drained the lower unit grease and refilled with new stuff. Is there anything else that could have been damaged by having this loose bolt on the water. I was on the lake with it loose for about 2 hours and noticed it was running rough. I just want to make sure I didn't miss anything... Can water get in there, or would the grease keep it pretty dry and damage free. Any help would be appreciated.
