When changing gear lube noticed that my '88 Bravo I has a decent amount of side to side play in it, approx. 2-3" as measured at tail of drive. This has occurred over this season as know did not exist when boat was put in in spring. Not sure where to start looking?

Concerned this may have may have been partially caused b/c slip is shallow and drive may have been partially submerged in soft mud (Ches Bay) on occasion and boat was rocked by wind/waves. If this was the case is there any way to tell? Marina knows I have been concerned about draft of slip.

A little play is acceptable. If you think it is excessive, get in the boat and check all the steering mech behind the motor.Have someone move the drive while you look to see where the play is.Charlie

Re: Loose Bravo outdrive?

I don't know if this applies to Bravo drives, but I noticed quite a difference between the Alpha on my boat and the Alpha on my father's boat. When I bought my boat the drive was too tight -- very difficult to turn. A little heat and grease solved that. Most mechanics in the area said the opposite problem was more common -- too loose. That's what I find on my father's boat. His is VERY loose. The lower bushing where the lower unit turns to the left and right is obviously worn out. Can you tell if that is where the play is coming from? If so, I personally doubt that would happen from rocking back and forth in low water, but rather from use and perhaps lack of grease. (That is of course far from a professional opinion and doesn't mean they shouldn't dredge your slip a little deeper! :p )

the merc tech who spotted slop in my alpha I said that it was caused by a worn out gimbal ring.
