1976 45 HP Chrysler outboard. The edge of the coil was cracked and I could wiggle the terminal back n forth. Would this cause engine to run bad on and off? I would think the wiring is still connected in the coil to the terminal stud. I was moving the terminal back n forth but couldn't tell if that was the problem with engine running.
Your comments are appreciated!!!

If it is cracked then there is a problem.
I suppose you have the battery ignition system, and the coil will dry and crack if you leave the key in run position when not running current will flow through the winding and will heat the insulation.
Change coil!

"Run bad" ???
Better description?

Try coating with that black goop you see on TV.
The stuff the guy uses to paint a screen in the bottom of a row boat.

Lots of times the cracking is harmless and then it could be bad.

Thanks! Your right about getting another coil, but the price is outrageous for these coils. I'll start searching for one.

The coil will dry?? So there's some kind of liquid inside the coil??

No, no liquid inside.
But the insulation between the coil wiring is a varnish and it dry out and crack.

If you leave the ignition switch in ON position when not running current will flow through the prime side of the coil if the points is closed.
This will quicken the dry out.

OK gotcha. An old coil I use to have on the engine was cracked and was leaking some goo. Guess the varnish overheated and dripped out. Thanks.
