I was changing the belts this week on the boat and have noticed that the main pulley drive moves about but I have tried to tighten the 4 bolts on there but they seem OK.

Is it normal for this pulley to be loose?
It does make a noise also when driving

How can I tighten it up?

Re: Loose pulley drive

No, it's not normal. Is it the pulley on the harmonic balancer or the water pump? If it's on the water pump pulley, you may be losing the water pump.

Re: Loose pulley drive

No, water pump is fine, all seems OK with it.
Its the centre pulley looking face on at the engine.

Not the pulley for the water pump
Not the power steering pump
Not the alternator

I'm not sure what its called, sorry.

Re: Loose pulley drive

Ok, I made a picture. Somehow I think your problem is the circulation pump pulley is wobbling. It's turning the circulation pump (aka water pump in automotive terms). If that is the case, and the bolts are tight, the the pump is bad and needs replaced.

Re: Loose pulley drive

Thanks Don, I thought the water pump was the raw water pump?
Yes it is the circulation pump pulley as you have drawn.
Is it a case of removing and replacing this pulley?
What could have gone, it looks such a simple part, are there bearings in there?

Re: Loose pulley drive

If the 4 bolts are tight, it's not the pulley. The bushings are worn out of the circulation pump. Time for a new pump.

Re: Loose pulley drive

OK Don thanks, this would seem the case.
Do you happen to know the part number so I can look to price one up?
Are they a lot of work to change?

Don - any thoughts of the part number and difficulty of replacing it?

Re: Loose pulley drive

Managed to get the part number and have ordered one today.
Looks like a simple change to be honest, but if anyone has tips then I would appreciate it.

I have the same issue on my pulley. Did you replace the pulley or the water pump to fix the problem? Did you get a part number. Thanks
